  • Overview

    The Senior Applications Engineer –  Industrial, Network Power is the primary technical representative responsible for the daily Application Engineering activities of the Network Power group.  This position is directly responsible for managing the support of Network Power customers in the following segments: 1) Telecom, 2) UPS 3) Utility and 4) Solar/Alternative Energy.  This position must be able to interpret NP customer specifications and requirements to achieve customer approval.  This position requires the ability to participate on cross functional teams as well as to track and monitor NP project status.  This position must be able to work across cultural boundaries and be expected to manage customer expectations on a global basis where needed.  This position also works in partnership with the Transportation and Motive Power Applications Engineering groups for products and projects that cross multiple internal and market scopes.  This position also works with the shared resources (labels, packaging specifications, liability, product test lab) in the Applications Engineering department. 

     

    This position will work and coordinate very closely with Network Power Sales and the Product Managers in Marketing to develop business cases, develop program plans, coordinate project management tasks to ensure timely execution of product launch and customer approval.  This position requires a solid understanding of all Network Power segments as well as a sufficient level of detail of customer needs for new product development.  The Senior Applications Engineering – Segment Leader will be required to report out on project status/progress on regular intervals and will be required to present directly to segment customers and internal partners as needed. 

     

    Responsibilities

     

    • Serve as primary technical liaison between Exide and Network Power customers
    • Prepare and present technical information to customers in a professional, organized and understandable manner
    • Determine customer qualification requirements and translate into executable test plans tied to customer approval
    • Communicate with internal and external test labs to plan, execute and report out test results
    • Interface with internal commercial (Sales, Marketing) and operations teams (Plants, Purchasing, Finance) as needed on business plan development, program management and product launch coordination
    • Communicate directly with customers by supporting miscellaneous daily technical inquiries
    • Engage with the Global Engineering group on defining customer technical requirements, ensuring rigorous product qualification testing and proper design control of engineering specifications and standards
    • Participate in the design, development and engineering change control process although position does not have direct responsibility for these areas
    • Assist QA with customer field return analysis/warranty programs and internal product compliance performance testing
    • Coordinate NP application engineering staff activities on a day to day basis as needed to drive prioritized projects
    • Participate in industry standards/committee activities and professional/technical organizations such as IEEE, Telcordia
    • Write weekly status reports on NP projects and activities
    • Work with Sales and Business Development to review technical purchase specifications and prepare quotations
    • Service as lead for the design & technical evaluation of purchased ancillary equipment (e.g. racks, spill containment, cabinets)
    • Support the custom order process through generation of bills of material and drawings
    • Function as primary assembly engineer responsible for NP tray and component designs, updates, and improvements.

    Qualifications

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required

    Education & Experience

    • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field (Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical preferred)
    • Three to five years experience in the design, development, applications and/or manufacture of lead-acid batteries or other backup power industry products
    • One to three years interfacing with customers in a technical capacity in various market segments (ie: telecommunications, UPS, utility)
    • Direct working knowledge of basic electrical circuits/electrochemistry, sheet metal/plastic part design, First Article Inspection
    • Ability to interpret customer technical specifications and industry standards
    • Demonstrated project management experience and participation on cross functional teams

    Software Skills

    • MS Office suite required including advanced ability in the areas of Excel data analysis/presentation
    • Autodesk AutoCAD/Inventor required

    Work Environment

    • Normal office environment with occasional customer and plant visits. Must be able to work remotely using portable PC connectivity
    • Must be able to occasionally work in a lab or warehouse environment with hands-on handling of lead acid batteries and battery components while using required personal protective equipment.  Lifting requirement of 50 lbs. typical

    Domestic travel when needed (approx 10%-20%.)  Must be able to travel by air with minimum restrictions.

    Some global travel required typically once per year for approximately one week duration
