  • Overview

    The Product Engineer position is a critical technical team member that has broad responsibilities to support the Product Engineering team. The functions of this job are geared towards the development and improvement of new and existing products at Exide. This person will serve as an important technical contributor to the team with responsibilities ranging from conducting battery builds, managing laboratory experiments, analyzing data using statistical methods, and monitoring the progress of electrical battery testing. This position is located at our Milton, GA headquarters near Atlanta with sporadic travel to various Exide facilities within the US (and very rarely outside the US).


    This position will be working in a lead-acid battery environment and must conform to all OSHA regulated EH&S requirements.

    Responsibilities

    • Manage and provide updates on all laboratory electrical testing 
    • Remotely monitor progress of battery performance
    • Troubleshoot and diagnose testing anomalies
    • Analyze data for trends and results with statistical significance
    • Prepare report-outs on a regular basis of updated test results
    • Sporadic travel to testing facility
    • Participate in battery builds as needed to support team objectives
    • Travel mainly to Ft. Smith, AR and Kansas City, KS facilities and other locations as needed
    • Collect data from equipment and operators during builds
    • Assist in laboratory equipment specification and procurement
    • Serve as a technical leader on general laboratory equipment, especially BET, XRD, and TGA instruments
    • Coordinate project activity with internal and external labs, scientists, engineers, and business leaders as needed

    Qualifications

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required

     

    Education & Experience

    • Must have a Bachelor’s or higher in a technical field (Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or related)
    • An advanced degree is preferred (Master’s, Ph.D.), but outstanding candidates with only a Bachelor’s will be considered
    • Experience in the battery industry is a plus, but not a requirement
    • Six Sigma is desired

    Software Skills

    • Advanced MS Office suite competency required including Excel data analysis, Word and PowerPoint document generation
    • Minitab and CAD skills a plus
    • Coding experience in any language (Java, C++, Python, etc.) is a plus

    Work Environment

    • Must be able to work regularly in a lead-acid battery plant with no restrictions
    • Must be able to work in a hands-on lab environment with handling of lead-acid batteries and battery components while using required personal protective equipment
    • While performing the duties of this job, individual is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
    • Individual is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel or crouch
    • Ability to regularly lift a minimum 50 lbs., and 51 to 150 lbs. with assistance of equipment, on a daily to weekly basis
    • While performing the duties of this job, individual is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles
    • Individual regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock
    • Noise level is minimal
    • Regular use of safety glasses and protective shoes
    • Vision requirements: close vision.

    Travel as needed: 25% and occasional needs up to 50%; Must be able to travel by air with minimal restrictions

    • This position may occasionally be required to travel to customer sites and communicate effectively with customer representatives. The person who will succeed in this role must be a self-motivated, technically curious and creative individual, who can work well with teams and by his or herself unsupervised.
