The Senior Application Engineering Manager, Industrial leads the Applications Engineering Department for the Industrial market segments which includes both Network Power and Motive Power.   This position manages a staff of 5 area Application Engineering specialists and reports to the Director of Marketing, Industrial.  The primary responsibilities of this position are to manage the staffing and budget resouces related to support Applications Engineering for these segments as well as interfacing with all functional areas in the Exide Americas organization. 


The Applications Engineering role consists of providing technical interface between customers and Exide, ensuring customer requirements are properly defined/qualified and ensuring product recommendations are consistent with the customer-intended applications.  This position draws upon a wide breadth of experience and qualifications which includes multiple disciplines (design, development, manufacturing, quality, applications), multiple technologies, and multiple markets. Application Engineering serves as the subject matter expert for guiding customer needs toward the proper Exide technical solution for batteries, chargers, and accessories. 


  • Supervises and manages the Industrial Application Engineering staff which includes the Network Power and Motive Power segments
  • Manage a staff of 5 area specialists spanning multiple locations
  • Develop and manage a department budget
  • Prepare and present technical information to customers in a professional, organized and understandable manner
  • Determine customer qualification requirements and translate into executable test plans tied to product launches
  • Assist in development of business plans and RFPs for the various market segments
  • Assist project managers in developing program timelines that address customer and internal Exide requirements
  • Interface with internal commercial (Sales, Marketing) and operations teams (Plants, Purchasing, Finance) as needed on business plan development, program management and product launch coordination
  • Work cross-functionally to constantly improve warranty programs, processes and procedures
  • Assist Quality with customer field return analysis/warranty programs and internal product compliance performance testing
  • Coordinate with the Global Engineering group on defining customer technical requirements, ensuring rigorous product qualification testing and proper design control of engineering specifications and standards
  • Communicate with internal and external test labs to plan, execute and report out test results
  • Plan, compile and present project status updates to executive management on monthly/quarterly basis as needed and publish monthly status reports
  • Determine necessary organization structure, hire, train and develop staffing to meet changing organizational needs
  • Provide technical counsel to Exide upper management
  • Participate in industry standards/committee activities and professional/technical organizations such as BCI, SAE
  • Supervise the Industrial Applications Engineering staff on a day to day basis as well as annual performance appraisal review, employee discipline and conflict resolution
  • Ensure all product development, customer support and launch activity is conducted in accordance with applicable Quality System requirements and Exide policies and procedures


Education, Experience, Certifications:

  • College degree, MBA preferred
  • At least 10 years of experience working in technical marketing and/or interfacing with customers in a technical capacity
  • Experience developing and managing a department budget thru the full fiscal year cycle
  • Automotive, Material Handling or Energy Storage background preferred
  • Demonstrated cross-functional team leadership

Travel, other requirements:

  • Self starter that is self-motivated and committed to team and company objectives
  • Must be able to occasionally work in lab environment with hands-on handling of lead acid batteries and battery component while using required personal protective equipment. Lifting requirement of 50lbs typical
  • Team player with agility and adaptability with the willingness to change the status quo as strategies of our business evolve Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Travel up to 50% will be required including International travel
