The Motive Power Senior Product Engineer position is a critical technical team member that has broad responsibilities to support the MP Product Engineering team. The functions of this job are geared towards the development and improvement of new and existing products at Exide. This person will serve as an important technical contributor to the team with responsibilities ranging from conducting battery builds, managing laboratory experiments, analyzing data using statistical methods, and monitoring the progress of electrical battery testing. This position is located at our Milton, GA headquarters near Atlanta with sporadic travel to various Exide facilities within the US (and very rarely outside the US).


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty under the guidance of the appropriate supervisor and/or by himself. Essential duties include the following; other duties may be assigned.

  • Design new products to meet requirements of customers and/or marketing and sales. Effectively translate the “voice of the customer” to new products. Product breadth includes all products currently in the Transportation business portfolio.
  • Initiate and assist in new VAVE projects focused on improving the cost and quality of current product lines. This may include new or enhanced design, materials or process related projects.
  • Facilitate the introduction of new or modified materials to the product line and provide technical support data to Marketing to create a compelling sales story.
  • Prepare Bills of Material necessary for battery construction
  • Issue product specifications to match product construction or in support of other departments
  • Initiate sample builds, coordinate builds effectively with the plants, capture build successes and failures
  • Manage projects which require strong cross functional engagement. Facilitate team building.
  • Effectively capture cost reduction savings and determine impact to product lines and the business.
  • Interface with customers as required to solve customer field/engineering problems and present new ideas
  • Coordinate translation of customer product descriptions as provided by Sales /Marketing (or the customer) into product designs and specifications
  • Facilitate product related standardization to global standards an applicable.

There are no direst supervisory responsibilities but the position will need to  provide direction to other product development engineers, technicians and lien operators in the planning and execution of development projects as appropriate.


Education / Experience

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Materials Engineering
  • Minimum of two year’s experience in product design/development.
  • Battery experience preferred.
  • Software Skills

 Software Skills

  • Advanced MS Office suite competency required including Excel data analysis, Word and PowerPoint document generation
  • Minitab and CAD skills a plus
  • Coding experience in any language (Java, C++, Python, etc.) is a plus

Work Environment

  • Must be able to work regularly in a lead-acid battery plant with no restrictions
  • Must be able to work in a hands-on lab environment with handling of lead-acid batteries and battery components while using required personal protective equipment
  • While performing the duties of this job, individual is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
  • Individual is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel or crouch
  • Ability to regularly lift a minimum 50 lbs., and 51 to 150 lbs. with assistance of equipment, on a daily to weekly basis
  • While performing the duties of this job, individual is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles
  • Individual regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock
  • Noise level is minimal
  • Regular use of safety glasses and protective shoes
  • Vision requirements: close vision.


Travel is required in order to execute the objectives of the position and business and will vary depending on the business priorities and business flow and can be as much as 25%.
