Overview

The Director of Motive Power Engineering is the top technical leader responsible for all design and development of the flooded Motive Power product manufactured by the Exide Americas Division.  This position reports to the Vice President of Research, Development and Engineering.  This position is based in Milton and collaborates closely with the Operations teams (Plants, QA, Procurement) and Commercial teams (Sales / Marketing) and other RD&D teams.  This position is responsible for overseeing product design and insuring that the implementation of manufacturing processes and capital projects are done in a manner consistent with product requirements/needs.  This position must be able to lead, coach and manage teams responsible to carry out the functional responsibilities which include;  interpreting customer and manufacturing requirements and translate these into clear and concise program and project tasks; generating engineering drawings and communicate with external suppliers to procure and qualify new molds and equipment; effectively lead projects using the generally accepted program management protocols including program charters, timelines, critical path analysis, potential problem/opportunity analysis, budgeting and issue resolution/escalation; the ability to design, execute and analyze experimental studies to quantify cause and effect relationships; coordinate competitive benchmarking, cost reduction and engineering-related quality improvements.  Technical project work often includes use of Lean Six Sigma tools for problem solving (DMAIC) and data analysis.  The Director of MP Engineering will also interface with Exide European technical representatives to benchmark best practices as well as transfer appropriate technologies between the European teams and the U.S. teams.  This position is also responsible for working the Motive Power Charger team to set design and performance targets.  This position is also responsible to direct the in-house design resources dedicated to the Lithium battery product designed to serve the Motive Power segment.  The MP Product Development Manager will supervise technicians and engineers on a direct and indirect basis.  

Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform essential duties that include the following; other duties may be assigned.

  • Direct the long and short term project activities of a team of approx. 10 engineers, scientists and technicians. Some team members may be manager level leaders.Manage all department personnel aspects of the team including hiring, performance reviews, coaching and critical feedback.
  • Manage the departmental budget including yearly planning, monthly budget report review and forecast adjustments.
  • Generate high level strategic plans for the functional department and present and review with senior management.
  • Generate periodic departmental status reports (weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc) as needed and requested
  • Determine customer qualification requirements and translate into executable test plans to drive DVs, PVs and product launch
  • Act as a program manager for major projects and be able to complete the following
    • Development and issue CERs for major programs (~ $5-10 million funding)
    • Developing program timelines that address customer and internal Exide requirements
  • Interface with internal commercial (Sales, Marketing), operations teams (Plants, Purchasing, Finance) and technical teams (INA Engr, R&D) as needed on product test plans, business plan development, program management and product launch coordination
  • Lead problem solving/troubleshooting projects utilizing Six Sigma analysis tools
  • Assist QA with customer field return analysis/warranty programs and internal product compliance performance testing
  • Correctly utilize the engineering change control process for deviations and spec changes.
  • Manage Motive Power product test labs and lab staffing resources.
  • Plan, compile and present project status updates to management on weekly/monthly basis as needed
  • Ensure all product development, customer support and launch activity is conducted in accordance with applicable Quality System requirements and Exide policies and procedures

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in an Chemical Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum 10 years experience in the design, development and manufacture of lead-acid batteries of the flooded and/or AGM/VRLA technology or other energy storage devices.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working directly with plant operations managers and production teams.
  • Demonstrated competence with Six Sigma analysis methodologies
  • Direct working knowledge of ISO Quality System requirements
  • Prior supervisory experience and/or prior demonstrated experience and competence directing technical resources (engineers, scientists) on projects
  • Demonstrated leadership values for integrity, courage, accountability and customer success.
  • Candidate must have excellent writing and speaking skills and be able to communicate up, down and laterally throughout the organization. 

Software Skills

  • MS Office suite required including advanced ability in the areas of Excel data analysis/presentation and PowerPoint preparation
  • Minitab data analysis
  • Ability to read/interpret engineering drawings using CAD software/readers

Work Environment

  • Normal office environment, customer visits, plant visits. Must be able to work remotely using portable PC connectivity
  • Must be able to work regularly in a lead acid battery plant with no restrictions.
  • Must be able to occasionally work in lab environment with hands-on handling of lead acid batteries and battery component while using required personal protective equipment. Lifting requirement of 50lbs typical
  • Travel when needed up to 25-50% including international. Must be able to travel by air with minimum restrictions
