Engineering Product Development Manager

This position is directly responsible for managing product development activities for the Transportation –America’s product line. These products may include Flooded, EFB/MHF and AGM products. Primary development focus  includes electrochemical, component and material design. The individual will support new product development and market launches to support top line revenue growth as well as projects focused on driving non-value added cost out of the product.  This position must be able to interpret internal and external customer specifications and requirements and translate this to a clear and concise program map. This position requires the ability to coordinate cross functional team development as well as to track and monitor project status. This position must work with Sales, Marketing, Quality, Operations and other groups to ensure customer expectations are met. The position will also work with other RD&E staff to assure innovative ideas are leveraged into value to the business. The  individual will supervise a group of engineers with varying levels of experience and is responsible for the development of these employees.  The position is located in Milton, GA.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform essential duties that include the following; other duties may be assigned.

  • Design new products to meet requirements of customers and/or marketing and sales. Effectively translate the “voice of the customer” to new products. Product breadth includes Transportation products for Automotive, On and Off- Road Truck, Marine and Specialty
  • Initiate and assist in new projects focused on improving the cost and quality of current product lines. This may include new or enhanced design, materials or process related projects. Coordinate changes with the entire product line in mind.
  • Facilitate the introduction of new or modified materials to the product line and provide technical support data to Marketing to create a compelling sales story.
  • Issue product specifications to match product construction or in support of other departments
  • Initiate sample builds, coordinate builds effectively with the plants, capture build successes and failures
  • Manage projects which require strong cross functional engagement. Facilitate team building. Develop and issues CERs for major projects. Develop project timelines to meet project objectives. Lead or support PMO driven requirements to ensure projects successfully proceed through the gating process.
  • Interface with customers as required to solve customer field/engineering problems and present new ideas
  • Facilitate product related standardization to global standards an applicable.
  • Assist in the development of the department budget
  • Prepare and present technical information to customers in a professional, organized and understandable manner
  • Interface with internal commercial (Sales, Marketing) and operations teams (Plants, Purchasing, Finance) as needed on business plan development, program management and product launch coordination
  • Assist QA with customer field return analysis/warranty programs and internal product compliance performance testing
  • Provide technical counsel to Exide upper management and Exide customers
  • Ensure all product development, customer support and launch activity is conducted in accordance with applicable Quality System requirements and Exide policies and procedures
  • Supervise the assigned engineering staff on a day to day basis as well as annual performance appraisal review, employee discipline and conflict resolution.

This position will be responsibility for supervising one or more engineers and/or technicians. In this capacity the individual carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable procedures.  Provides assistance when interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Competencies, Skills, Knowledge:

Language Skills:

  • Demonstrate an ability to read and interpret technical documents, specifications and CAD drawings.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and to speak effectively before groups

Project Management

  • Planning & Organizing – Ability to generate and execute project plans, develop work breakdown structures, managing schedule, objectives, resources and budget in a cross functional environment.
  • Effectively prioritize tasks to meet project schedules – work on multiple tasks simultaneously, both independently and in a team-oriented environment.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to calculate figures such as statistical, algebraic and trigonometric values, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
  • Demonstrated application of basic concepts of statistics and data analysis

Reasoning Skills:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists

PC Software Knowledge:

  • Strong computer skills including knowledge of  Windows based programs, spreadsheets and word processing programs.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and engineering based computer programs

Physical Demands:

  • Hearing, speaking, seeing, writing, standing, lifting (50 lbs), sitting, bending, walking, and carrying

Work Environment:

  • Normal office environment and battery plant visits where there is some exposure to lead, acid, fumes, dirt, and noise
  • Design Skills:
  • Basic knowledge of CAD systems and ability to read drawings with assistance, the ability to translate basic chemical and electrochemical concepts to functioning battery designs. 

Required Education, Experience:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Five to ten years experience in product design/development of batteries or battery systems. Lead –acid experience preferred.

Travel, additional requirements:

  • Travel is estimated at 20%, primarily domestic.
